In the USA, Techno was for the most part an underground music scene; however in the UK, during the 1980s, it managed to break into the mainstream. The early 1990s saw techno evolve into different sub-genres, such as Drum & Bass, Gabba and the more commonly known Hardcore Techno.
A tracks speed is measured in beats-per-minute (or BPM) and Hardcore Techno tracks can be extremely fast, almost undanceable, with BPM levels at 180+. Ambient Techno evolved in totally different way, with slower beats relying on softer, more harmonic sounds. Ambient Techno is also known as Chill-out Techno as clubbers would listen to this as a break from the frenetic beats of the hardcore and gabba rooms.
Jungle Techno was just as frenetic and fast paced as its Hardcore counterpart, with pounding Techno beats laced with tribal sounds and reggae MC vocals. Acid Techno had much more of an electronica sound, incorporating techno beats with acid drops and squelches, produced by synths (such as the TB-303 & TR-808) and other effects boxes.
Progressive Techno is a variation on Acid Techno, but its signature is the way that its tracks build-up, layer by layer, instrument upon instrument, over time, in a progressive manner (hence its name).
Due to the evermore sophisticated computer technology and music making programs, it’s never been easier to create your own Techno music, even with little or no prior knowledge of music production. While it’s easy to lay down a few loops and create a track, it’ll take whole lot of practice before you kicking out tracks like Moby!
